Subscription Addiction | Birchbox July 2015 Review
I just received my July 2015 Birchbox, the theme for this month is Go Bold. The packaging has a very noisy neon pattern.
stila look at me liquid lipstick trio in venizia ($6.67): The color, venizia, is a bright coral. It is very bold, and very pigmented. When I first swatched it on my arm, I was worried I wasn't going to like it. The formula is quite thick and a little goopy. The color also stained my arm when I tried to wash it off. This lipstick was much brighter and bolder than anything I've ever worn before, so I was apprehensive I'd end up looking like Ronald McDonald. But after I put it on, I was quite pleasantly surprised. The lipstick is crazy bright but I think it'd work well for a weekend party or outing. It is definitely in line with Birchbox's Go Bold theme. Downside is that the lipstick rubs off on everything even hours after application.
Supergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream SPF 35+ in Light/Medium ($2.04): I was so excited when I saw this CC cream listed in my spoilers online. I saved it in my Sephora favorites. This sample is super tiny though. There'd probably only be one or two uses in it. The color I received was Light/Medium which was way too dark for me (I'd bookmarked Fair to Light on Sephora). The color is actually even darker than what shows up in the pictures. I look like I have a faux tan with the CC cream on. Disappointing. The texture of the cream is thicker than other CC creams I've tried but still spreads pretty easily. I still want to sample this in Fair/Light. Buy at: Dillard's, Sephora.
Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray ($4.59): This is a light hold hairspray for beachy, texturized waves (exactly what I want). I would not recommend this for styling updos or anything that needs a firmer hold. It has the typical hairspray scent, but it dissipates after a while which I like. I was surprised by the intensity of the spray coming out of the bottle, it was like water shooting out of a fire hydrant. I'd hold the can a good 12 inches away from my hair in order to get the wide, fine mist instead of a crazy, narrow stream. I'm very happy with this spray though. I might even buy it in full size after I finish up my old hairspray can. Buy at: Net-A-Porter.
Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel ($4.80): At first I thought this was a mask, like a chemical peel, but then the first sentence in the directions say "This is not a mask." Good thing I read the directions. This product is a clear gel that you spread on your damp face and massage with your fingers. The gel then turns clumpy, sticky, and white - the texture of semi-dried liquid Elmer's glue. According to the package, this means the gel is combining with your dead skin cells. Kind of weird, kind of cool at the same time. I just tried a little bit on my arm for curiosity's sake. The size of this sample is also quite small. The box looked like a good size but I took the product out and discovered the extra long cap was the reason for half the box length. The size of the tube is only a tiny bit bigger than the CC cream sample (3 ml cream vs 5 ml peel). The elongated cap just makes the peel sample seem bigger. Buy at: Nordstrom.
Total Value: $20.71 Rating: 3/5
Overall: Though I was much happier with the types of products in this month's Birchbox versus previous Birchboxes, The sizes of the samples in this selection were tiny!! The wrong color CC cream was also a disappointment. The total value also seems to be on the low end coming in at about $20 versus the June box I received with a value of about $50. How did you fair with Birchbox this month? What samples did you get? Let me know in the comments below! :)
