23: Yucca

Yucca is a genus of perennial shrubs and trees that are native to hot and dry regions of the Americas. The plants have sword-shaped leaves that grow in a rosette pattern, and they often produce tall spikes of white or purple flowers. Yucca are known for their ability to withstand intense heat and drought, and they are frequently used in landscaping for their attractive foliage and hardiness. In addition to their ornamental value, yucca plants have many practical uses. The roots contain saponins, which have natural cleansing properties, and the fibers from the leaves can be used to make twine, ropes, baskets, and mats. Yucca is also a traditional food source for some Native American tribes, who consume the starchy root after removing the toxic saponins through a careful process of baking and soaking.
