The Single-Staircase Radicals Have a Good Point, Henry Grabar

To be honest, I wouldn’t mind the single staircase. My building in San Francisco was like this. It was actually nice to walk down the stairs, and the landing space on upper floors was well lit by windows. Also been in apartment styles with the corridors and yeah, the corridors feel sterile and unfriendly. What about fire escapes? Do those count as another way to exit? From my rental experience, it’s nearly impossible to find an affordable one bedroom. So, some creative ways to make housing more affordable is appreciated.

Really great points in this article that the system isn’t set up to accommodate single people. I’d also say the system isn’t set up well to accommodate anyone who wants to do anything outside of a nuclear family unit. I’ve run up against this problem myself around insurance issues recently. Family should be defined as more than just a spouse and children. What about elderly parents or siblings? It makes it difficult to build a larger support system when legally this is not allowed.
